Laser eye surgery has become a popular solution for those seeking freedom from glasses or contact lenses. Among the latest innovations is Custom Eyes LASIK, a procedure tailored to each patient’s unique eye profile using advanced technology. This method not only corrects common vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism but does so with impressive speed and accuracy, offering a promising option for many.

According to the National Central Biomedical Laboratory (NCBL), Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a widely used eye surgery to correct vision errors. Patented in 1989 by Dr Gholam Peyman, it was first applied clinically in the early 1990s. Thirty years on, advances in technique and technology continue to make LASIK a safe and reliable alternative to glasses or contact lenses.

Custom Eyes LASIK utilises wavefront-guided technology to map the cornea’s microscopic irregularities, allowing us to develop a highly personalised treatment plan that addresses each patient’s specific vision needs, says Prof. Dr. Mahipal S. Sachdev, Chairman and Medical Director of Centre For Sight Group of Eye Hospitals.

The procedure’s special feature includes rapid laser ablation phase, typically completed within 10 seconds. “This is achieved through the use of high-speed laser pulses, sophisticated real-time software, and an advanced eye-tracking system that continuously monitors even the slightest eye movement, says Dr. Sachdev.

Here’s what you need to know

  • Personalised diagnostics: Before the surgery, comprehensive tests, including corneal mapping, aberrometry, pachymetry, and tear film analysis, are conducted. “These assessments provide detailed data, enabling surgeons to customise the laser treatment to each patient’s eye structure,” Dr. Sachdev shares.
  • Flap creation: As per Dr. Sachdev femtosecond laser creates a thin, hinged flap on the cornea in under 15 seconds. “This flap is carefully lifted to allow access to the corneal tissue beneath,”
  • Laser ablation: The excimer laser reshapes the corneal stroma in about 10 seconds. “The speed of this step not only reduces patient discomfort but also helps protect the cornea from potential thermal damage,” notes Dr. Sachdev.
  • Flap repositioning and healing: After the laser reshaping, the corneal flap is repositioned and acts as a natural bandage to aid healing. Most patients can resume light activities within a day or two, with vision stabilising over the following weeks.
  • Benefits of a shorter treatment: A brief laser exposure time offers several advantages: less anxiety and discomfort for patients, reduced corneal dehydration, and potentially quicker visual recovery. Many patients report clearer vision within 24 hours.

Dr. Sachdev cautions that while the treatment is not suitable for everyone, this approach offers precision and comfort for many patients seeking improved vision without glasses. “Consultation with a specialist is essential to determine the best treatment for personal needs,”
